This image cruelly portrayed former President Barack Obama, the nation's first Black president, and his wife, Michelle Obama, as apes, all set to the tune of 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' from Disney's The Lion King.
The White House's initial response was to defend the post, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating to the media, 'This is from an internet meme video depicting President Trump as the King of the Jungle and Democrats as characters from The Lion King. Please stop the fake outrage and report on something today that actually matters to the American public.'
And this is the part most people miss: this defense was short-lived. A later statement to this publication from a White House official revealed a significant backtrack: 'A White House staffer erroneously made the post. It has been taken down.' This rare admission of error came after a wave of criticism from Trump allies.
Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, the sole Black Republican senator, voiced his dismay on X, stating, 'Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House. The President should remove it.' Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican and chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, echoed this sentiment, calling the post 'totally unacceptable' and urging Trump to apologize.
Democrats were equally outraged. Hakeem Jeffries, the House of Representatives' Democratic leader and the first Black person to head a major party in Congress, didn't hold back, calling Trump 'sick' and demanding that Republicans condemn his actions. Trump has been vocal about his continued belief in voter fraud theories, especially with the midterm elections approaching in November. He has even suggested that Republicans should 'take over' and 'nationalize' the vote-counting process in numerous states. However, the US Constitution clearly assigns the responsibility for administering national elections to the individual states.
