Tonka Tough: Blown 4x4 Holden VY ute - Da Hulk (2026)

Let's talk about a true automotive masterpiece, a project that pushes the boundaries of what we know and love about cars. Gary Gibbons' VY SS ute, or 'Da Hulk', is a testament to innovation and a unique blend of power and off-road capability. This build is a prime example of how a passionate car enthusiast can transform a vehicle into something extraordinary.

A Unique Vision

Gary's journey began with a simple idea: to combine the ruggedness of a 4WD with the performance of a Holden Commodore. He started with a brand-new VY SS ute and set out on a two-year adventure, transforming it into a one-of-a-kind machine. The result? A beast that defies conventional expectations.

The Transformation

The underbody of the Holden required minimal modifications, but the real work happened with the Nissan Patrol chassis. All the factory body mounts were removed, and new ones were fabricated to align with the Commodore's subframe. It was a delicate dance of engineering and creativity, and the outcome is a seamless blend of the two vehicles.

Making It Fit

One of the most challenging aspects was ensuring everything fit together perfectly. Fabtech, a now-defunct company, played a crucial role in manufacturing custom front mudguards and rear wheel-arch flares. Gary had to fabricate new 'tubs' from steel, leaving little of the original wheelhouses intact. The front guards are now one-piece fibreglass replacements, a necessity to accommodate the massive 15x10-inch wheels wrapped in 39.5-inch Super Swamper tires.

Power and Performance

Under the hood, Gary kept the SS's 5.7-litre Gen III V8, a powerful choice. To mate it with the Nissan's 4WD transmission, a Mark's adapter plate was used, showcasing the expertise of Mark's in engine conversions. Gary even designed his own engine and transmission mounts, moving the gearbox and transfer case to provide the necessary clearance. The addition of a Harrop supercharger with an intercooler adds an extra layer of excitement to this build.

The Driving Experience

Stepping into Gary's SS is an experience like no other. The interior, with its green and black plaid trim, offers a comfortable and familiar environment. But as soon as you hit the road, the sensations change dramatically. The supercharger's torque delivers an incredible agility, and the sound of the four massive muddies fills the cabin. Cornering is an adventure, with the body leaning over like you're atop a ship's mast. And Gary's trick of getting on the throttle mid-corner adds an element of thrill and surprise.

Off-Road Capabilities

While currently set up for shows, Gary's SS has the potential for serious off-road adventures. With a lower center of gravity and the right rolling stock, it could become a formidable off-road machine. Gary proved its capabilities during our photo shoot, tackling hills with ease.

A Unique Legacy

In the world of automotive conversions, Gary's Hulk stands out. It's a continuation of a unique Australian tradition, following in the footsteps of the Overlander Kingswoods and other innovative 4WD conversions. This build showcases the creativity and skill of Australian car enthusiasts, pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

Final Thoughts

Gary Gibbons' VY SS ute is a true testament to the power of passion and innovation. It's a unique blend of performance and off-road capability, a machine that challenges our perceptions of what a car can be. This build is a reminder that, with the right vision and expertise, anything is possible in the world of automotive customization.
