Dahiya suggests that these devices are more about convenience than functionality. The key to their development has been advancements in OLED display technology, allowing manufacturers to create these innovative designs. Over the years, they've also refined their material choices and manufacturing processes, leading to improvements in durability, as noted by Ruobing Bai, an engineering expert.
But building a foldable phone is no easy feat. And this is the part most people miss: It's more complex and costly than manufacturing a standard smartphone. Every step, from display production to durability testing, adds to the overall expense. With multiple high-resolution displays and various moving parts, foldable phones are inherently more expensive to produce and are likely to remain less durable than traditional phones.
The Galaxy Z TriFold, for instance, is priced at approximately $2,428 in South Korea, a stark contrast to the $780 price tag of a one-screen Samsung Galaxy S25. With such a high entry barrier, Dahiya predicts that foldable phones will remain a niche product for tech enthusiasts in the near future.
Looking ahead, truly bendable electronics could offer more versatility, such as a screen that wraps around your wrist as a smartwatch. However, this technology is still in its infancy.
