A Legacy to Live Up To: Ron Harper Jr.'s NBA Journey
Imagine having a father who played over a thousand NBA games, won five championships, and mentored basketball legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. That's the invaluable resource Ron Harper Jr. has at his disposal. When his father offers advice, it's not just words; it's a wealth of experience that demands attention.
"The NBA is a tough league to crack, and it's even tougher to stay there," Ron Jr. shared, echoing his father's wisdom. "Making it is one thing, but sustaining your career is the real challenge."
And so, Ron Jr. finds himself in Maine, playing for the Celtics on a two-way contract, navigating the family business of basketball. With only 15 games of NBA experience under his belt, every minute on the court in Maine is a step towards his ultimate goal.
His father, Ron Sr., left an indelible mark on the NBA, playing for the Cavaliers, Clippers, Bulls, and Lakers, and winning championships alongside icons. Meanwhile, his mother, Maria, a collegiate player herself, coached her sons through their youth careers, teaching them about the highs and lows of the game.
"She instilled in me the importance of maintaining a balanced mindset," Ron Jr. explained. "Every game is unique; some will be your best, others your worst. The key is to stay level-headed."
Ron Jr.'s brother, Dylan, was drafted second overall by the San Antonio Spurs last June, just behind another Maine native. The Harper brothers have a close bond, talking daily, and their paths occasionally cross on the court, as was the case when Ron Jr. and the Celtics faced Dylan and the Spurs.
Now in his fourth professional season, Ron Jr. is making a compelling case for a permanent spot in the NBA. His stats with the Maine Celtics are impressive: averaging over 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game, with a high of 46 points in a win over Delaware.
"His shooting ability is undeniable," said Maine's coach, Phil Pressey. "But it's his leadership that sets him apart. He's always preparing his teammates, ensuring everyone is aligned."
At 25, Ron Jr. is still considered young in basketball years. His experience in the G League has earned him respect among his younger teammates, and his words carry weight.
"His time in the G League has been transformative," Pressey added. "He's learned the right things to say and do, and that's what will take him to the next level."
Growing up around the game leaves an indelible mark, and Pressey, whose father also had a long NBA career, understands this well. Even without witnessing their fathers' careers firsthand, both Pressey and Harper Jr. have an innate understanding of the dedication required for success.
"Ron listens, and that's a skill that will take him far," Pressey concluded.
As Ron Sr. watched his son play on Friday, his quiet, knowing demeanor reflected a father's pride and a shared understanding of the challenges his son faced. It's a fight Ron Jr. knows well, and one he's determined to win.
