Are you ready to step into a role where your technical expertise and leadership can truly shine? The National Theatre in St Kilda is on the hunt for a Production & Technical Manager, and this might just be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. But here’s where it gets exciting: this isn’t just any technical job—it’s a chance to lead a dedicated team in one of Melbourne’s most iconic cultural venues. And this is the part most people miss: it’s a hands-on role where you’ll be at the heart of every production, event, and technical challenge, ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.
About the Role
In this full-time position, you’ll be the driving force behind all technical, production, and backstage operations across our historic St Kilda venues. This is a leadership role that demands both creativity and precision. Here’s what you’ll be diving into:
- Leading Technical Operations: Oversee lighting, audio, AV, staging, rigging, and fly systems—ensuring every performance is technically flawless.
- System Maintenance & Development: Keep our technical systems up-to-date, maintain detailed documentation, and manage equipment inventories.
- Production Planning & Delivery: From interpreting technical riders to providing creative solutions, you’ll ensure every production, event, and venue hire is executed seamlessly.
- Team Coordination: Manage production schedules, staff rostering, and resource allocation while mentoring casual technical staff.
- Safety Compliance: Uphold OH&S standards, conduct risk assessments, and ensure all work procedures are safe and compliant.
- Relationship Building: Foster strong connections with hirers, presenters, schools, contractors, and suppliers.
- Budget Management: Oversee technical budgets, maintenance, and capital upgrades.
- Organisational Contribution: Collaborate across departments to support the theatre’s broader goals.
But here’s where it gets controversial: With a small core team, this role demands a hands-on approach. You’ll be troubleshooting technical issues, supporting live shows, and even handling venue maintenance when needed. It’s not just about managing—it’s about rolling up your sleeves and getting involved. Is this a role for a manager or a doer? We say both—and that’s what makes it unique.
About You
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- Proven Experience: A track record in technical and production management within a performing arts venue.
- Technical Expertise: Strong operational knowledge of lighting, audio, AV, rigging, and staging.
- Specialized Skills: Experience with power loading, ETC Eos Nomad, counterweight fly systems, and rigging scenery.
- Leadership Qualities: Demonstrated ability to manage technical teams and roster casual crew.
- Communication Skills: Excellent stakeholder engagement and problem-solving abilities.
- Creative Problem-Solving: Confidence in interpreting technical riders and delivering complex productions.
- Safety Knowledge: A comprehensive understanding of theatre OH&S requirements.
- Flexibility: Availability to work evenings and weekends.
Desirable Extras: Qualifications in Test & Tag, Working at Heights, rigging, and experience with Allen & Heath, Midas, or Yamaha consoles will give you an edge.
