NHS Updates: Pay Rise, Waiting Lists, and Devolution (2026)

The UK's NHS is facing a complex situation, with a 3.3% pay rise for over 1.4 million workers, but is it enough? The government has announced this increase, but health unions are not satisfied. While the health secretary, Wes Streeting, claims it's above inflation, unions argue it's not enough, especially with inflation rising to 3.4% in December.

But here's where it gets controversial: The Health Service Journal estimates this pay rise will create £1.2 billion in cost pressures. Dean Royles, interim chief executive of NHS Employers, highlights the early acceptance of the Pay Review Bodies' recommendations, ensuring all NHS Agenda for Change staff receive their annual pay uplift at the start of April. However, he stresses the need for funding clarification.

In other news, NHS waiting lists for procedures and appointments in England have decreased, but A&E departments are facing record waits. Over 160,000 patients waited more than four hours in January, and nearly 72,000 waited over 12 hours. NHS Providers and the NHS Confederation's director, Rory Deighton, warns of the immense pressure on the NHS.

And this is the part most people miss: The NHS 10 Year Health Plan's neighbourhood contracts are delayed until at least April 2027. A public consultation is needed on the purpose of single and multiple neighbourhood provider contracts, which will then influence future GP contracts. NHS England's CEO, Sir Jim Mackey, calls for a 'reset' in the NHS's deal with staff, emphasizing better working conditions and productivity.

An urgent question was raised in parliament about Pharmacy First payments being withheld, with technical issues and rural pharmacy pressures among the concerns. The Health Innovation Minister, Dr. Zubir Ahmed, promises government collaboration to improve the Pharmacy First service.

The government is also pushing forward with devolution, inviting areas without devolution to express interest in Foundation Strategic Authorities. Miatta Fahnbulleh, the minister for devolution, sees this as a significant step, allowing more areas to access devolution benefits. These FSAs will have powers over health, wellbeing, and public service reform.

Lastly, a new program in West Yorkshire aims to enhance health through creativity, focusing on art, music, and nature-based activities to improve mental and physical health. Mayor Tracy Brabin believes this approach will lead to better health outcomes and shorter NHS waiting lists.
