Loro Piana Unveils Revolutionary Royal Lightness Yarn and Fabric
MILAN — After an extensive two-year research endeavor, the renowned Italian luxury brand Loro Piana unveils its patented Royal Lightness yarn and fabric. This groundbreaking innovation is a testament to the brand's commitment to excellence and craftsmanship. The Royal Lightness yarn is a harmonious blend of silk and merino wool, while the fabric combines silk and cashmere, both meticulously developed and processed in-house at Loro Piana's facilities in Roccapietra and Quarona, Italy.
The yarn's fineness and delicacy are unparalleled, requiring Loro Piana's expertise to 'knit' without breaking threads. It features Mulberry silk, the finest silk in the world, measuring a mere 21 deniers, and merino wool sourced from Australia and New Zealand, measuring 13.5 microns. Only 0.05 percent of annual merino wool production meets this precise micron range, further emphasizing the yarn's exclusivity.
The Mulberry silk and merino wool are treated with a special finish, enhancing their delicacy and luminosity. Loro Piana's artisans skillfully comb, spin, and twist two strands of yarn, preserving the inherent qualities of each fiber. The Royal Lightness fabric, weighing just 350 grams per meter, is a masterpiece combining 21-denier organzino silk with long-fiber 15-micron cashmere.
The company explains that the silk thread is expertly wrapped around the cashmere, imparting luster and strength for weaving. The final stages involve tumbling the fabric for a fluffy, raised pile, reminiscent of Loro Piana's signature style. Brushing, raising, and shaving further enhance depth and direction, resulting in a unique light-reflecting quality.
The fabrication process concludes with the rare fell stitching technique, performed by hand with thread and needle, ensuring a smooth finish on both the outer and inner sides of the garment. Loro Piana's digital and print campaign emphasizes the fabric's lightness, featuring imaginative visuals.
