Facing the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, the Wallabies are up against a formidable challenge: a lack of player depth. This is the core issue, according to Dave Wessels, SA Rugby's general manager for high-performance rugby. He believes that Australia's ability to compete on the world stage hinges on addressing this critical area.
The Wallabies, once champions in 1991 and 1999, have struggled in recent years. Their performance in the 2023 Rugby World Cup was particularly disappointing, as they were eliminated in the pool stages for the first time in the tournament's history under coach Eddie Jones. Jones's tenure ended shortly after, and Joe Schmidt took over as head coach, showing signs of improvement, although the team is still a work in progress.
Their 2025 international campaign showed promise, but they only managed to win 4 out of 14 Tests. Wessels, who has experience with Australian rugby from his time as head coach of the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels between 2016 and 2021, emphasizes the importance of improving player depth to be competitive in 2027.
"I think (for) Australian rugby, and the Wallabies, the biggest challenge Australian rugby themselves have is just a lack of player depth at the moment," Wessels stated. He highlighted that while the team can perform well with their best players, injuries and the demands of a long season expose their lack of depth compared to other top-tier nations. This is the crux of the problem.
But here's where it gets controversial... Wessels anticipates the Springboks to be among the favorites in the upcoming World Cup, although he believes it's premature to definitively predict the winner. He also anticipates a successful tournament in Australia, with large crowds and a positive impact on the sport's popularity.
