Get ready to be amazed! Australian soccer has a new superstar in the making, and his name is Antonio Arena. At just 16 years old, this Aussie prodigy is already making waves in the world of professional football, and his debut for Italian side Roma is nothing short of sensational.
On January 14, 2026, Arena stepped onto the field in the 80th minute of Roma's Italian Cup clash against Torino. What happened next? He scored with his very first touch! Yes, you read that right. Coming off the bench, he headed the ball past Torino's goalkeeper, Alberto Paleari, leveling the score at 2-2 in the 81st minute.
"Yes, it was a great moment," Arena shared, "I felt a bit nervous but I came on and thought just about playing and a nice cross came from Wesley to the far post and I scored at goal. For me nothing has changed, I will keep working hard and train."
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite Arena's stunning debut, Torino managed to snatch a 3-2 victory with a late goal. Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions!
Arena's performance earned high praise from Roma's coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, who noted his "great competitive drive" and "a lot of energy." Gasperini added, "He's already playing for national youth teams."
Born in Sydney, Arena holds dual citizenship and has represented both Australia and Italy at the youth international level. He honed his skills with the A-League Men side Western Sydney Wanderers before moving to Italian club Pescara.
And this is the part most people miss... Last year, Arena made his senior and professional debut for Pescara, scoring a goal in a 4-1 win. At 16 years and 25 days old, he became the first 2009-born player to score in professional football in Italy and the youngest goalscorer for Pescara. In July 2025, he signed with Roma.
Before his Serie A debut, Arena showcased his talent on the international stage. In 2024, he debuted for the Australian under-16 side. The following year, he represented the Italian under-16 team in international friendlies.
