In a surprising turn of events, Auburn, Alabama, has emerged as a leader in homeownership growth over the past decade, according to a recent analysis by Realty Homes. This is particularly noteworthy given the city's unique challenges and demographics.
The analysis, which examined U.S. Census data for cities with populations of at least 65,000 and at least 5,000 occupied housing units from 2014 to 2024, revealed Auburn's impressive rise. Despite facing obstacles such as a large student population traditionally suppressing homeownership and the lowest homeownership rate and median income among the top 10 cities, Auburn has managed to increase its homeownership rate from 43.75% in 2014 to 53.07% in 2024.
But here's where it gets interesting. Auburn's population has grown significantly, from 53,380 in 2010 to 80,594 in 2024. This growth, combined with the city's median home value of $364,800 and median income of $63,668, has contributed to the increase in homeownership. The analysis highlights Auburn's remarkable turnaround, stating, 'Auburn saw one of the largest increases in ownership from a relatively low starting point.'
The only other Southern cities to make the top 10 were Cape Coral and North Port, Florida, which ranked eighth and tenth, respectively. This ranking showcases the diverse trends in homeownership across the nation, with Auburn's story standing out as a testament to the power of resilience and strategic growth.
